Jexx Varner

Head Coach Lafayette College

Jexx Varner begins his fourth season as the Lafayette softball head coach. The program looks to have turned the corner following the 2016 season, a campaign that saw Lafayette manage its best winning percentage since 2001 and had 18 statistical performances in the Top-11 all-time.


Academically, Lafayette softball has been a standout program, earning the Department of Athletics Academic Excellence Award with a 3.53 GPA while finishing 10th in the nation among all Division I programs.


Prior to coming to College Hill, Varner was an assistant coach at Kent State for three seasons. He helped guide Kent State to a 27-21-1 mark in 2013 and the Mid-American Conference East Division title. He worked closely with the outfielders and catchers while also mentoring all of the team's hitters.


He assisted in all aspects of the Golden Flashes' program, handling team travel and compliance, while aiding in practice planning, game scheduling and gameday strategies on the staff of head coach Karen Linder who just completed her 16th season at the school.


Prior to his time at Kent State, Varner was an assistant coach at Ashland University, a Division II institution in Ashland, Ohio. Varner helped the Eagles to a 36-13 record and a 2010 NCAA Division II Super Regional appearance under head coach Sheilah Gulas. The team set 16 school records and placed seven players on the all-conference team.


Varner served as an assistant coach for two seasons at his alma mater, Robert Morris University, in Moon Township, Pa. In 2008, the Colonials posted a 30-20 mark, the program's first 30-win season since 1997 while landing seven players on the All-Northeast Conference squad. The two teams on which he coached went a combined 27-9 in NEC play with two regular-season, second-place finishes and two NEC Tournament berths.


At Robert Morris as an undergrad, Varner served as the head coach and president of the baseball club from 2005 to 2007. He graduated in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration-Sports Management and earned his master's degree in 2009 in Organizational Studies-Leadership.


Varner also coached baseball at the high school level in Fort Collins, Colo. and held numerous administrative duties with Triple Crown Sports for nearly a decade.


Varner was married to his wife Amy in 2014.

Ashley GerhartAsst. Coach Lafayette CollegeAshley Gerhart begins her first year as an assistant coach at Lafayette under head coach Jexx Varner. A 2016 graduate of Robert Morris University, she was a three-time All-Northeast Conference outfielder at the school in western Pennsylvania where she earned her bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Gerhart was the NEC Rookie of the Year in 2013 when she garnered All-NEC First-Team honors. She achieved first-team status again in 2015 and finished her career by being named All-NEC Second Team in 2016. Gerhart ended her career in the top 10 in seven statistical categories including games played (197), hits (187), doubles (28) home runs (17), walks (62) run scored (101) and stolen bases (28). She was a four-year starter and captained her team in her senior season. The Aliquippa, Pa. native attended West Alleghany High School where she earned WPIAL Softball All-Section Honors all four years (2009-2012).  Carly RiepenoffAsst. Coach Lafayette CollegeCarly Riepenhoff begins her first season as an assistant coach on Jexx Varner's staff. Previously, she served as the Assistant Learning Specialist for Student-Athlete Academic Services at Kent State University. Prior to Kent State, she taught Human Anatomy and Sport Physiology to high school students at Celina High School in Celina, Ohio. Riepenhoff is a 2010 graduate of Bowling Green State University where she majored in Exercise Science and was a four-year member of the Falcon's softball team. After graduation, Carly worked as a sports performance coach and private pitching instructor for junior high and high school athletes at F.A.S.T. in Lima, Ohio. She earned her master's of science degree in Exercise Physiology while at Kent State and completed a master's certificate program in College Teaching. A native of Lima, Ohio she resides in Easton, Pa. with her husband, Andrew.   Kristen JordanAsst. Coach Lafayette CollegeKristin Jordan begins is in her third season as an assistant coach with Lafayette softball. Prior to coming to Lafayette, she spent three seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, DeSales University. Schultz made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament as a player and coach and ranks in the top 15 at DeSales in numerous statistical categories including games played (157), at-bats (405), hits (116), doubles (23), RBIs (71) and put-outs (780). She was SeSales' starting catcher all four years of her career, earning All-Freedom Conference First-Team honors her final three seasons. The Lehigh Valley native attended Parkland High School where she helped guide her team to LVIAC and District 11 championships in 2004 and 2005. Schultz graduated from DeSales in 2011 with a degree in both marketing and management.
